Victoria Marshall, PhD, RN will begin serving on the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research Board of Directors in January, 2027.

‘A spot at the table’: College of Nursing's Victoria Marshall Elected to FNINR Board of Directors

Victoria Marshall, PhD, RN, of the USF Health College of Nursing has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR), a national organization that advocates for federal funding to advance nursing science. Her election is more than a career milestone; Marshall says her upcoming position gives the college a "seat at the table" in national conversations about nursing research funding.

"I am feeling excited and grateful for the opportunity to represent the USF College of Nursing," Marshall said. "I am motivated and committed to advocating for adequate federal funding and support to advance nursing science to improve the health of individuals and communities."

Marshall, a nurse scientist, will be inducted in January 2027 and will serve a two-year term. She responded to FNINR's call for nominations, bringing prior National Institutes of Health funding, an active research program, and previous board service with the Southern Nursing Research Society and the Greater Tampa Oncology Nursing Society.

This achievement marks the continuation of the college’s representation on the FNINR Board. Dean Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, FSBM, has held a board position for the last two years as well. Once Dean Menon’s term concludes later this year, Marshall will begin hers and keep the College of Nursing in the position to support nursing research across the country.

What she plans to do

On the board, Marshall will take part in meetings focused on philanthropy, since donations to support nursing research are critical. She will also help train and support nurse leaders to educate policymakers on the value of nursing research and serve on committees that recognize researchers' achievements and raise their visibility.

Her background connects practice, research, and advocacy. She has co-authored research-based oncology nursing practice guidelines and supported policy change for fair access to oral anticancer medications through national organizations like the Oncology Nursing Society.

"I think sharing the links between practice, research, leadership, and advocacy is important, and that is what I bring to the table," she said.

Marshall also plans to start by listening. She intends to attend her first board meeting, get to know the group, and understand the board's current needs before deciding where she can serve best.

What it means for USF

Marshall serving on the FNINR Board provides representation for the College at the national level and an opportunity for advocacy for the profession, nursing research, and nursing education. Additionally, her access adds practical value. She’ll have her finger on the pulse of federal funding updates, insights into legislative trends, policy developments, and national health priorities. That information can be shared quickly with faculty and students and will help the university compete for research grants.

The role also opens doors beyond funding. Board service builds relationships with top academic and healthcare institutions and with nationally recognized, funded nurse scientists, connections that can support recruitment of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students.

"Serving on the Board is a prestigious honor and speaks to the quality of our faculty by displaying commitment to nursing science and improving the lives of individuals and communities."
