David C. Anchin Center launches free professional development series to help educators teach online

TAMPA, Fla. (May 4, 2020) 鈥 Teaching online demands new approaches to facilitate learning, and the David C. Anchin Center for the Advancement of Teaching has launched a new series of online professional development courses to help K-12
teachers learn best practices for effectively teaching online.

With millions of educators forced to rapidly move courses online due to the coronavirus
pandemic, this course will help K-12 teachers sharpen their skills with hands-on activities
and discussions centered on current best practices in distance learning. Offered free-of-charge
and in an online, asynchronous format, the course will allow participants to engage
in class activities throughout the week at their own pace.

鈥淓ducators at every level are relentlessly working to keep students progressing in
their learning journeys,鈥 said James Hatten, PhD, a faculty member in USF鈥檚 instructional technology program and the instructor for the course. 鈥淲hat many realize now is online and distance
teaching is much more complicated than just managing online systems, utilizing technology
tools and posting assignments. Effective online teaching requires special pedagogical
skills and practices. This professional development course will introduce them to
some of the key concepts to help them be more successful."

Participants can register for one of two sessions, taking place June 15-29 and July
6-17. Those who complete at least 80 percent of the course鈥檚 activities and regularly
check-in during both weeks of the session will receive a certificate of completion.
