Undergraduate
study abroad
Studying history abroad offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to experience the past in its original cultural and geographical context. By engaging directly with historical sites, artifacts, and local perspectives, students gain a deeper appreciation of how history shapes societies and identities. This immersive learning environment fosters critical thinking, cross-cultural understanding, and independent research skills, while also broadening personal horizons and preparing students to become globally minded scholars and citizens.
USF SICILY - HISTORY AND CULTURE (Spring 2026)
The Department of History offers an ancient history Spring Break program consisting of an immersive experience in ancient Greek and Roman history and archaeology based on one intensive week of field studies in Sicily, one preparatory week before the program and one assessment week after. Sicily, recently featured in the White Lotus HBO series, is the largest Mediterranean island. It is an important part of Italy, just off the "toe" of the "boot." Its rich history and culture are palpable. On Sicily鈥檚 eastern edge is Mount Etna, one of Europe鈥檚 highest active volcano. The program will include the visit of the Greek theater, the amphitheater and the Roman baths of Catania; the Hellenistic theater, the Odeon, and the 鈥淣aumachia鈥 of Taormina; the archeological park of Neapolis of Siracusa; the Roman villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina; the archeological site of Morgantina; the Greek temples and the archaeological museum of Agrigento.
The program is tied with the online course HIS 3938 Mediterranean Cultures (3 CR).
