USF Recreation & Wellness hosts a monthly SCUBA class that is open to the general public. NAUI® Open Water Diver is the first scuba certification level. A highly-trained NAUI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment. By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and knowledge to dive at home or abroad and be an ambassador for the underwater world.

Scheduling and Structure of Course:

The SCUBA Certification takes place online and in-person over six (6) days.

• Day 1: The first Friday session, you will attend an academic review (either in-person or virtual) with the Black Flag Team.
  • Info: Black Flag Dive Center Classroom^* (or virtual meeting)| 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
• Day 2: The first Saturday session, you will have a classroom session covering all the materials in review.
  • Info: Black Flag Dive Center Classroom & USF REC Pool | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Day 3: The first Sunday session, you will attend preliminary, confined water dives in a morning and afternoon session.
  • Info: USF REC Pool | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Day 4: The second Friday session, you will attend Nitrox training to learn how to mix your canisters safely and effectively.
  • Info: Black Flag Dive Center Classroom | 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
• Day 5: The second Saturday session, you will do your first open water dives under supervision.
  • Info: Lake Denton, Sebring FL^* | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Day 6: The second Sunday session, you will finish your open water dives under supervision.
  • Info: Prehistoric Devil's Den, Williston FL^* | 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

* Locations are subject to change and will be confirmed prior to class start.

Open Water Dives:

In order for a student to receive SCUBA certification they must complete five (5) Open Water Dives. These dives are done over two dates, usually occurring on the Saturday and Sunday the weekend following the first day of the course.

Equipment:

Each student must provide their own mask, fins, and snorkel.

You have the option when registering to add-on an appropriate rental set, or purchase a new, high-quality set. If you have your own gear, please bring it with your first day of certification.

USF will provide tanks, wetsuits, air, regulators, buoyancy compensators, and weights.
