Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR)

• Felipe Stanchak, a Ph.D candidate in the College of Marine Science, received a Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research award in March 2026 from the national organization in support of his research.
• , a Ph.D. candidate in Integrated Mathematical Oncology, received a GIAR award in the March 2025 grant cycle. Her project uses mathematical modeling and public health approaches to improve understanding of cancer progression and patient outcomes. She is affiliated with Moffitt Cancer Center and the USF College of Arts & Sciences.

USF's Goldwater Scholars

We are thrilled to announce that for the first time in USF history, all four nominees have been named 2025 Barry Goldwater Scholars for excellence in Undergraduate Research. This prestigious recognition includes three members of our chapter:

• Abdul Malik-Zekri for computational neuroscience, mentored by George Spirou, Tim Fawcett, and Ankur Mali (all at USF).
• Benjamin Barrera-Altuna for applied AI, mentored by Sungbae Kim (USF), Dae-Yun Lee (Yale), and Yu Yang (Lehigh).
• Taylor Rand for ecology/entomology, mentored by Sarah Sheffield, Richard Pollenz, and Edmund Brodie (UVA).

Congratulations to Abdul, Benjamin, Taylor, and the other scholar, Peter Alspaugh, for their outstanding achievements!

USF Sigma Xi is incredibly proud of Keegan Suero and Daniela Zamora-Alviarez, 2024 Sigma Xi inductees, for winning prestigious Goldwater scholarship for their research in mechanical engineering. Daniela is also a recipient of USF Sigma Xi grant in aid of research.
