Chapter Membership

Each spring and fall, the USF chapter of Sigma Xi conducts a nomination and selection process for new members, with nomination deadlines of February 1 and September 1. Individuals selected for invitation are notified by email.

Sigma Xi membership recognizes outstanding achievement and potential in research and scholarship. The chapter maintains a permanent record of members inducted each year.

Induction Ceremonies

New members are formally recognized at the USF Student Research Awards Luncheon, hosted by USF Research each April.

 Annual programs provide additional details about the ceremony and award recipients.

Membership Considerations

Sigma Xi membership is by invitation (nomination) and is based on scholarly achievement.

• Nomination by two Sigma Xi members is required
• Membership is not tied to a specific degree or other organization
• Students and non‑students follow the same review process
• Sigma Xi and its chapters do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability

Full Membership (primarily faculty)

• Full Membership recognizes established researchers who have demonstrated notable achievement as original investigators in pure or applied science.

• Eligibility requires at least two refereed research outputs (e.g., journal articles as primary author, patents, or refereed monographs).

• Dissertations or theses alone are not sufficient.

Associate Membership (primarily students)

• Associate Membership is intended for students and early‑career researchers who have conducted independent research and written a research report in pure or applied science.

• Associate Members may later be promoted to Full Membership once Full Membership qualifications are met.

Promotion to Full Membership follows the same review process as an initial nomination.
