Black-White Poverty Rate Gap
- The poverty rate gap in Tampa Bay has steadily improved over the decade, falling from
16.7% in 2013 to 9.7% in 2024. Tampa Bay now sits in the middle of the comparison MSAs, reflecting gradual reductions in racial disparities in economic hardship. - Austin, Dallas, Orlando, Houston, and Miami consistently report some of the lowest poverty rate gaps, generally between 4–10%, making them among the top-performing MSAs for racial equity in poverty outcomes.
- In contrast, Minneapolis, Portland, St. Louis, Denver, and Seattle show the highest
and
most persistent poverty gaps, often exceeding 14–25%. These MSAs rank at the bottom,
indicating deeper structural disparities in income and economic security.
