2026 E-Insights Report
Premature Death
- Premature death is rising across almost all MSAs. From 2015 to 2024, average premature death generally trends upward, indicating worsening early mortality over time rather than improvement.
- Tampa Bay is consistently a high-mortality MSA. Tampa Bay鈥檚 premature death rate was in the mid-7,000s in 2015 and rose to the high-8,000s by 2024, placing it regularly among the three to five worst MSAs in this peer group (alongside Jacksonville, St. Louis and Baltimore).
- Large gaps exist between best and worst performers. Healthier metros like Austin, San Diego, Minneapolis and Seattle have substantially lower premature death (around the 4,700鈥5,700 range), while higher-mortality metros like Jacksonville and St. Louis are well above 9,000 in recent years, highlighting big regional disparities in early mortality risk.

Trend Over Time

Competitive Position Trend

About: Premature Death measures early mortality as the average years of potential life lost (YPLL) before age 75 per 100,000 population (age-adjusted). Higher values mean that, on average, people in that MSA are losing more years of life due to deaths occurring before age 75, so lower is better. The value for 2023 is an estimate, because County Health Rankings data for that year are not yet available; it has been approximated based on recent trends.
